Watermelon Martini

My watermelon margarita is a very popular pick--check it out in my reels--but I've been dreaming about a watermelon martini ever since I saw the Ladies of London (over)imbibe them at Bumpkin years ago on Bravo! (If you don't understand this reference, then bravo to you for having better taste in television.) Their watermelon marintins looked icy cold and utterly refreshing. Consider this drink to be the easier version of the margarita because no pre-freezing of the watermelon is involved. You still have to get your blender out to make the watermelon juice but it's worth it! And if you don't like gin, just double up on the vodka. Cheers!

Makes 1

  • 3 oz watermelon juice (see how-to below)

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka

  • 1 1/2 oz gin

  • 1 1/2 oz freshly squeeze lemon juice

  • 1/2-3/4 oz agave syrup (depending on how sweet you like your drink)

  • Watermelon for garnish, if desired

Fill a large shaker with ice and add watermelon juice, vodka, gin, lemon juice and agave. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with watermelon if desired

Watermelon Juice

  • 2 cup cubed watermelon

Blend watermelon cubes on high until smooth and then strain through a fine-mesh strainer. Repeat the straining and store in the refrigerator, up to 2 days in advance. Shake before using. Yield 1 cup juice.
